The new Audi A8 is due to make its debut next month at this years Frankfurt Motor Show with the promise of even more elan and greater efficiency. The body of the new A8 has been “Weight Optimised” built around an Audi Space frame made almost all out of aluminium and weighing just 231kg.
Exterior changes include a redesigned bonnet, a single flame grille and front bumper along with sharper, more angular edges along the bottom of the headlights. At the rear there is a newly designed bumper which incorporates the twin?trapezoidal exhausts tail pipes and new rear LED tail-lights.
Inside the A8 is more luxurious than ever with a huge selection of different upholstery and inlays many of which are new including “Fine Grain ash brown-gold natural” and “Unikat” leather. People who like their toys will be happy too as there is a raft of new technology and options including new “MatrixBeam” LED headlights (25 LEDs per headlamp), Front seats with ventilation and Massage function, electrically adjustable rear seats, relaxation seats with electronically adjustable footrests, intelligent cornering lighting, dynamic? turn signals, active lane assist,? a 360 degree auto-parking system, an upgraded “night vision assistant” that can now recognise large animals as well as pedestrians, four-zone automatic climate control and power assisted door closure. The Audio system is a courtesy of “Bang & Olufsen” with a rear seat entertainment setup comprising of two colour displays, Bluetooth headphones and a DVD player.
A choice of seven different petrol and diesel engines are available with most being revised for increased performance, better economy and lower emissions. The 3.0 litre petrol turbocharged V6 has gone from 286bhp to 306bhp with the 4.0 litre twin-turbo V8 now having 429bhp (an increase of 15bhp) and producing a 0-62mph time of just 4.5 seconds but under partial load the COD “Audi’s Cylinder on demand” system deactivates four of the eight cylinders to boost fuel economy. The S8 6.3 litre W12 is the fastest of the bunch though with a 0-62mph time of 4.2 seconds.
Those who prefer diesel there’s a 3.0 litre 254bhp or 4.2 litre 380bhp unit with a whopping 627lb of torque! or why not consider the 2.0 litre TFSI hybrid with a modest 44.8 mpg, 245bhp and system torque of 480Nm. All come paired with the quattro all-wheel drive system and an eight speed gearbox apart from the front wheel drive hybrid.
The new Audi A8 is expected to be arriving at UK showroom at the beginning of 2014 with prices expected to start from around ?55,000.
