Taking design cues from the new Audi A3 Saloon, the brand new Audi A3 Cabriolet will be making its world debut at this years 65th Frankfurt Motor Show making it the fourth variant of the a3 range.
Making use of the?VW Group?s MQB platform and an aluminium bonnet, the new A3 Cabriolet is 50kg lighter than the model it replaces weight 1365kg. Despite the reduction in weight it is actually 180mm longer with a length of 4420mm offering a more elegant profile and a boot size that has increased by 60 litres, giving it a 320 litre boot.
The new soft-top boasts a fabric roof with a glass rear screen which can be opened and closed whilst driving up to speeds of 31mph and in just 18 seconds with an “acoustic top” option available to reduce noise in the cabin using a thicker inner layer of foam.
The interior is straight from the A3 hatchback and includes the electrically retractable 5.8in screen for the satnav and audio features. There is also a new steering wheel design, new seats with a choice of cloth, leather or suede materials, LED headlamps and an electronic handbrake. As expected with Audi there is a nice selection of optional factory fitted items including – Bang & Olufsen audio, traffic signal recognition camera, “head level” heating for those sunny winter days, car Wi-fi hotspot (which allows passengers to connect their devices to allow functions such as Google Street View),?wind deflector and adaptive cruise control (that changes speed based on the road around you).
The new Cabriolet comes in a choice of three derivatives – Attraction, Ambition and Ambiente with a choice of a 1.4 litre 138bhp and 1.8 litre TFSI 178bhp petrol engines along with a 2.0 litre 168bhp diesel unit. The 1.4 litre petrol and 2.0 litre TDi units are paired with a six speed manual gearbox with the 1.8 litre petrol initially being available with a seven speed automatic with dual clutch.? Audi have said that the engines are around 12 percent more efficient than before in terms of economy utilising cylinder on demand technology amongst other things.
Although not available at launch, an S3 derivative will be made available shortly after the initial line-up powered by a 2.0 litre TFSI engine producing 296bhp and capable of reaching 62mph in just 5.4 seconds paired with a six speed S-tronic automatic gearbox and Audi’s Quattro four-wheel drive. The car will also feature larger 17″ brakes, a lowered suspension of 25mm and 18″ alloy wheels as standard. 19″ alloys will be available as a factory option along with Audi’s “Magnetic Ride”.
