Finally the 1st of July will see the highly anticipated Kia three door Pro-cee’d GT go on sale here in the UK. The Pro-cee’d GT will become the flagship model of the cee’d range with emphasis as you would expect sporting the GT badge on performance, in fact Kia themselves have described the car as the companies first ?performance oriented vehicle’. Although the car hasn’t been designed as an full out beast of a sports car it has been developed to give the driver an exciting driving experience that is fast but practical, an all-rounder that is good for everyday use. The car boasts a 210bhp turbo-charged 1.6 litre engine powering the front wheels via a 6 speed manual gearbox, this is the first turbocharged petrol engine to be offered by Kia in the UK and can take the car from standstill to 62mph in 7.4 seconds and on to a top speed of 143mph. This isn’t going to worry the likes of the Focus ST, Megane RS or the Astra VXR but it isn’t far off Volkswagen’s 220bhp Golf GTi.
The car has obviously undergone some modifications to the standard pro-cee’d with a stiffer chassis, larger rear anti-roll bar and sports suspension improving handling and stability but this isn’t as far over to the sporting side as Renault’s Megane RS for example and keeps the car comfortable enough to use as a day to day vehicle.? The steering has also been tuned with the usual Flex Steer system being removed leaving just the one level of assistance and bigger brake discs have been added to improve stopping.
Cosmetically the car has a redesigned front end and rear bumper, dual exhausts, LED daytime running lights and 18″ alloy wheels. Inside leather Recaro seats come as standard along with CD Player with iPod adapter, Bluetooth connectivity, electric windows and mirrors and tinted glass. Opting for the “Tech” pack for an additional ?2,500 adds a 7″ screen satellite navigation system, reversing camera, heated steering wheel, heated front seats, key-less entry and start, automatic lights and automatic wipers.
There are a choice of three different colours – Track Red, Fusion white and Metallic black. The Track Red and Fusion white are exclusive to the GT model and not available elsewhere in the range.
Pricing starts at ?19,995 for the GT and ?22,495 for the GT “Tech” which is more than ?6,000 cheaper than the entry level GTi and although to be honest it isn’t as nice to drive or look at as Volkswagen’s Golf, it is a lot of car for the money and only 20bhp behind the GTi’s engine output.
There is also going to be a strictly limited edition “1st Edition Model”, only 500 models will be available worldwide with just 50 heading to the UK. This special edition model has purely cosmetic changes, coming with the full GT Tech spec as well as an electric sunroof, red ambient lighting, black inserts in the alloy wheels, black high gloss door mirrors and “GT” illuminated sills with special edition numbering. This limited edition model comes in Fusion White and is priced at ?23,995 on the road.
The Kia Pro-cee’d GT is goes on sale on the 1st of July with a 5 door version due to be added to the range in 2014.
