Renault has always been famous for its Renaultsport brand, with that badge on the back of a Clio, Megane or even the little Twingo hot hatch fans no they are in for a treat and the Clio Renaultsport 200 isn?t going to disappoint.
This Clio on steroids produces 200 bhp and a 0-62 time of just 6.9 seconds with a great chassis it handles the corners as well as it goes in a straight line.
With this sort of performance there are obviously draw backs and they have to be the economy and the emissions but this is a sports hatch so if those things worry you then you are looking at the wrong type of car.
This is the fourth incarnation of the Clio Renaultsport. It started off over a decade ago as the 172 shortly followed by the 182 and then the 197 all of which have been immensely popular with used values holding strong in the second hand market.
With just an extra 3 bhp over the previous 197 model there isn?t a massive improvement in performance but it is obviously still a step forward and there a plenty of other improvements that overshadow this anyway.
Renault are still using the 2.0 16v non turbo unit with peak power being generated at around 7,100 rpm meaning the best performance is coming high in the rev range, great for over taking. With a 0-62 of just 6.9 seconds the Clio RenaultSport with head on up to a top speed of 141 mph so it is more than capable with keeping up with other hot hatches in the market place.
As with the previous Clio 197 buyers have a choice of two different chassis. The standard set up has thicker anti-roll bars and stiffer suspension than the standard Clio and is 48mm wider at the front and 50mm wider at the rear with a 10mm longer wheelbase as well.
The second chassis available is the ?Cup?. The cup model is 36kg lighter that the standard Clio Renaultsport, gives you a lower ride height, even stiffer suspension and a quicker steering rack.
As with all Clio Renaultsport?s they are only available to order in three door guise and come with some serious looking aggression. Big air intakes, low bumpers, nice side skirts and gorgeous twin exhaust pipes tell people this isn?t your everyday shopping Clio.
Inside the Clio has all the usual racing mods you would expect and have seen in the previous Renaultsport models. A leather steering wheel with yellow stitching, aluminium pedals and a yellow rev counter with gearshift indicator all go to show this car means business.
The standard sports seats offer good support and are comfortable but Renault do offer Recaros as an optional extra which is definitely worth considering.
As mentioned earlier emissions and fuel economy isn?t great. With today?s technology a 34.5 mpg is this size of car is far from great with the likes of Volkswagen?s Golf GTi achieving over 38mpg this is an area Renault definitely need to work on.
Apart from the emissions and fuel consumption the Clio Renaultsport ticks all the boxes and continues Renault well respected Renaultsport line up with its head held high.
Great performance, excellent handling and great looks make the Clio Renaultsport 200 a contender in the hot hatch market and will make this desirable on the used car market too.
